‘Memorialising Same-Sex Love: Commemorating the Past, Reflecting the Present, Informing the Future’
The Alan Turing Memorial in Sackville Park, Manchester
The talk will explore the ways that monuments and memorails engage with histories of same-sex love and speak to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and queer (LGBTQ) issues in the present. It will discuss how monuments dedicated to individuals such as Oscar Wilde and Alan Turing and those dedicated to LGBTQ groups, such as the Homomonument in Amsterdam, merge boundaries between the past, present and future. It will argue that monuments can play a crucial role in public engagement with the past.
